Power To The People

On aluminium panels attached to the walls of the transformer station at the Hoofddorpplein, Martijn Sandberg created a typographic pattern. The yellow colored letters change in intensity during the day as a result of the influence of daylight. In the dark and caused by street lighting or the headlights of passing cars, the letters light up very brightly.
After darkness falls, the work has a relationship with artificial light in its immediate surroundings and actually feeds on passers-by who make the text visible. This emphasizes the meaning of the text. ‘Power To The People’ on the one hand literally refers to the function of the building. On the other hand the slogan calls to mind associations with lyrics from rap-music.
For this language of the street Martijn Sandberg designed a typeface that fits in with the contemporary street culture with its graffiti and sampling. Meaning and form have completely merged and present themselves as one.

The artwork ‘Power To The People’ is no longer there. Because the tram drove too close to the transformer station, the work was removed.

Power To The People

Op de wanden van het transformatorhuis op het Hoofddorpplein bracht Martijn Sandberg op aluminium panelen een typografisch dessin aan. Er zijn gele schrifttekens op te lezen, die onder invloed van het licht overdag constant wisselen in intensiteit. In het donker lichten de letters fel op door de straat verlichting of de koplampen van passerende auto’s.
Zo staat het werk na het invallen van de duisternis direct in verband met het kunstlicht uit de nabije omgeving en wordt het gevoed door de voorbijgangers die de tekst zichtbaar maken. Dit past goed bij de inhoud van de tekst. ‘Power To The People’ verwijst enerzijds letterlijk naar de functie van het gebouwtje, anderzijds roept de slogan vooral associaties op met de teksten uit de rapmuziek.
Deze taal van de straat is vormgegeven in een door Martijn Sandberg ontworpen lettertype dat eveneens aansluit bij de hedendaagse straatcultuur van graffiti en sampling. Inhoud en vorm van de tekst zijn volledig versmolten.
